Overview
As the New Year approaches, families often look for a special way to celebrate and start afresh. If you’re considering a getaway, let me tell you why Honolulu, Hawaii, is the perfect destination to ring in the New Year with your loved ones.
Home Away From Home
Our family adventure began with our stay at a charming Airbnb nestled in a quiet suburb of Honolulu. This cozy retreat offered all the comforts of home, making it the perfect base for our family explorations. The serene neighborhood was a delightful contrast to the bustling tourist spots, providing us with peace and privacy. If Airbnb is not you style there are many great hotels that can accommodate small and large families.
Private Beach Days
One of the incredible perks of visiting Honolulu during the New Year is the feeling of having your own private beach. The beaches were surprisingly uncrowded, allowing us to relax and soak up the sun in almost complete privacy. The weather? Absolutely perfect.

Marine Life Encounters
Honolulu's waters are teeming with life. One sunny day, we were thrilled to see a manatee sunbathing near the shore. Another day, a group of playful dolphins appeared, adding a magical touch to our beach day.

Adventures on the Trail
Hawaii is not just about beautiful beaches; its hiking trails are equally mesmerizing. Hiking with kids can be challenging, but it was a breeze here with so much to capture their attention. We even had a little goat join us on one of our hikes—much to the kids’ delight! There are so many more amazing experiences from visiting the Pearl Harbor USS Arizona Memorial to visiting the Dole Plantation, that the entire family can enjoy.

New Year's Eve Fireworks
The highlight of our trip was celebrating New Year’s Eve at the Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa. The fireworks display was nothing short of spectacular, providing a dazzling backdrop to our family’s celebrations.

Zoo Adventures
A visit to the Honolulu Zoo was another treat, especially for the kids. It's a fantastic place to learn about exotic animals while enjoying the outdoors.

Sunsets to Remember
Each day ended with a breathtaking sunset, reminding us to savor each moment. The vibrant colors painting the sky were a daily spectacle that never got old.

Saying Goodbye
Unfortunately, all good things come to an end, and so did our Hawaiian New Year celebration. But the memories we made will last a lifetime, and we are already dreaming of our next visit.

Honolulu offers a unique blend of relaxation, adventure, and family-friendly activities, making it an ideal destination for a New Year's celebration. Whether it’s the wildlife, the hiking, the beaches, or the fireworks, there’s something in Honolulu for every family member to cherish. We’ll be back, Honolulu!

First-time visitors: Stay in Waikiki for convenience.

December-February (when we visited) - Cooler, less crowded, whale watching season, New Year's celebrations. April-May and September-October - Ideal weather, fewer crowds than summer, good deals. June-August - Peak family season, hottest, most crowded, highest prices. Avoid late November (just before Thanksgiving) when locals vacation and prices spike.

Waikiki Beach - Calm, lifeguards, easy access, kid-friendly Lanikai Beach - Stunning, calm water, less crowded, soft sand Kailua Beach - Calm bay, great for young kids, facilities nearby Ko Olina Lagoons - Man-made, protected, perfect for toddlers We had uncrowded beach experiences even during New Year's by going to beaches outside Waikiki. Save money by: renting condo with kitchen, grocery shopping at Costco/Target, free beaches and hiking, avoiding tourist restaurants in Waikiki. Aulani Disney Resort is expensive ($600+/night) but worth it for special occasions. Flight costs from mainland US are biggest expense.
