Overview

Flying into Mykonos during the day is an unforgettable experience. As our plane descended, we were greeted by the most beautiful blue waters, signaling the start of our dream vacation. From the moment we landed, we felt an overwhelming sense of relaxation and excitement.

An Adventure to Our Airbnb

The journey to our Airbnb was an adventure in itself. Navigating the tiny, hilly roads was quite the experience, but it added to the charm of our trip. Our taxi driver dropped us off at the side of a street, explaining that our Airbnb was located down a pedestrian-only area in the heart of Mykonos' famous strip. We set off with our luggage in tow, but after a few twists and turns, we found ourselves lost in the maze-like streets. Eventually, we made it to our apartment, and it was everything we had hoped for: beautifully designed and in a perfect central location. We had numerous restaurants and shops at our doorstep, and one of our favorite eateries was right next door.

Stunning Mornings and Cultural Tours

Waking up in Mykonos was like stepping into a postcard. The view from our apartment showcased the stunning blue waters, distant mountains, and white houses dotting the landscape. On our first day, we embarked on a comprehensive tour of Mykonos to immerse ourselves in the local culture. We explored Mykonos Town, The Windmills, Little Venice, Agrari Beach, the Monastery of Panayia Tourliani, and the Church of Paraportiani. The tour was enriching, and the kids especially enjoyed the little adventures along the way, such as feeding a donkey on our way to the beach and meeting Petros, the beloved mascot of Mykonos.

Snorkeling and Beach Bliss

The following day, we indulged in snorkeling right in front of our apartment and ventured a bit further along the coast. The crystal-clear waters and surprisingly uncrowded beach made for a perfect day of underwater exploration. Despite the busy area due to the influx of cruise ship visitors, we found a serene spot to enjoy the aquatic beauty of Mykonos.

Strolling Through Picture-Perfect Streets

One of my favorite experiences in Mykonos was wandering through the narrow, picturesque streets. The whitewashed buildings, faux cobblestone walkways, and occasional bursts of burgundy bougainvillea created a stunning backdrop. During the day, the streets were charming, but at night, they truly came to life. We loved the vibrant atmosphere, sampling delicious food, and exploring the unique shops. Each evening felt magical as we meandered through the illuminated streets, soaking in the ambiance.

Reflecting on Our Mykonos Adventure

Our family unanimously agreed that this was our favorite vacation to date. Mykonos captivated us with its beauty, delectable cuisine, and incredibly welcoming locals. The blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion made it a perfect family destination.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mykonos With Kids

  1. Is Mykonos good for families or is it too much of a party island? Mykonos has a party reputation, but it's absolutely wonderful for families if you choose the right areas and beaches. The party scene is concentrated in specific beach clubs (Paradise Beach, Super Paradise) and certain bars - easy to avoid. We stayed in Mykonos Town and it was perfectly family-friendly, safe, and charming. Beaches like Agrari, Ornos, and Platis Gialos are calm and family-oriented. Our kids loved it and we felt it was our best family vacation.

  2. What are the best family-friendly beaches in Mykonos? Agrari Beach - Our favorite, crystal-clear water, less crowded, good for snorkeling Ornos Beach - Calm waters, facilities, restaurants, easy access Platis Gialos Beach - Family-friendly with amenities, organized with umbrellas/loungers Kalafatis Beach - Good for older kids who want water sports Avoid Paradise and Super Paradise beaches - these are party beaches. Check cruise ship schedules - beaches get very crowded when ships dock.

  3. Where should families stay in Mykonos? Mykonos Town (Chora) is ideal - central, walkable, restaurants and shops everywhere, stunning views. We stayed here and loved it. Challenges: narrow pedestrian streets (hard with luggage/strollers), can be hilly, some noise at night (but quieter than you'd expect). Ornos and Platis Gialos are great for beach-focused families - calmer, family-friendly beaches, easier access with kids, but you'll need transportation to explore the island. Skip areas near Paradise Beach if traveling with kids.

  4. How do you get around Mykonos with kids? Rent a car or ATV if comfortable (parking can be tricky in Mykonos Town). Taxis are available but can be pricey and limited. Local buses run between main beaches and towns, affordable but can be crowded in summer. We walked everywhere from our Mykonos Town base and took organized tours for sightseeing. The narrow, maze-like streets are charming but challenging with strollers - baby carriers work better.

  5. When's the best time to visit Mykonos with family? June and September - Ideal weather, fewer crowds than July/August, still warm for swimming, lower prices July-August - Peak season, hottest weather, very crowded, highest prices, but guaranteed sun May and October - Shoulder season, good deals, pleasant weather but some businesses may be closed, cooler water. We visited in June - perfect weather, manageable crowds, everything open. Avoid late October-April when most hotels and restaurants close for winter.

  6. Is Mykonos expensive for families? Yes, Mykonos is one of the pricier Greek islands. Budget €150-250/day for family of 4 (accommodation, meals, activities). Save money by: choosing accommodation with kitchen for some meals, avoiding beach clubs with high sunbed fees, eating at local tavernas away from Little Venice (tourist prices), visiting in shoulder season. Still worth it - the beauty and experience are incredible.
